Ingredients
Scale
- 500 grams (about 4 cups) all-purpose flour
- 300 milliliters (about 1 ¼ cups) lukewarm water
- 10 grams (about 2 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 10 grams (about 2 teaspoons) sugar
- 10 grams (about 2 teaspoons) salt
- 30 grams (about 2 tablespoons) butter, softened
- Extra flour for dusting
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by combining lukewarm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Prepare the dough by mixing all-purpose flour and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and softened butter. Mix until a rough dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, divide it into 8 pieces, shape into balls, and flatten slightly. Make a cross or star pattern on top of each roll.
- Place the rolls on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F).
- Dust the rolls lightly with flour and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Cool the rolls on a wire rack to maintain their crispy crust.
Notes
- For gluten-free, use a gluten-free flour blend.
- For a vegan option, brush with water and oil instead of egg wash.
- Experiment with toppings like poppy seeds or herbs.
