German Onion Pie

German Onion Pie

  • Author: Chef Bella

Description

A delightful blend of caramelized onions encased in a flaky crust, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream (240 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for sautéing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. If using a store-bought pie crust, fit it into a 9-inch pie dish and set aside. If making a homemade crust, roll it out and place it in the pie dish, trimming any excess dough.
  3. In the skillet, add olive oil and thinly sliced onions. Sauté until caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  5. Pour the onion mixture into the prepared pie crust.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown.
  7. Let cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, use a gluten-free pie crust.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days or freeze for up to a month.
